THE SILVER SURFER

Imagine it: The cosmos is your ocean and you can hang ten in every corner! Limitless freedom… Endless possibility!

Sorry, dear reader. This is the world of comics. There’s always a price tag, and this one’s pretty heavy.

Astronomer Norrin Radd saw the planet-eater Galactus coming to chow down on his lovely home world Zenn-La. Norrin gave his life to Galactus in order to save his home. He was transformed into The Silver Surfer as part of the bargain, to serve as Galactus’s  herald. His new job: to scour the cosmos for planets that the big guy could eat.

Not so bad, right? He’s forbidden from going home, but he can go anywhere else in the universe and see incredible things.

But then, he finds Earth, and BOY does Galactus want to eat it. The Surfer has a pang of conscience and feels bad for all the innocent Earth people. He tries to get between the big boss and his meal. Bad idea. Galactus gets ticked off and leaves the Earth, but he traps Norrin down here with us slobs. No more surfing the stars.

So, after saving two planets and billions of innocent people, the Surfer gets beached on this lousy backwater planet. Goodbye, Zenn-La. Goodbye, infinite grooviness. Hello, Newark.
