1. SHANG-CHIShang-Chi’s journey to become Master of King Fu began as a young teen when he moved with his mother from New Jersey to California. He didn’t fit in with the surfer crowd, and immediately found himself being bullied and harassed by the other boys. These boys had great fighting moves and Shang was badly beaten up. His apartment building’s elderly Japanese caretaker came to his aid, and decided to teach Shang the art of self defense. At first, Shang’s training seemed like an endless series of menial tasks unrelated to the martial arts such as sanding floors or painting fences. It then became clear that the handyman has been subtly teaching Shang karate movements through these chores. In order to stand up to the local bullies, Shang entered a karate competition. On the day of the tournament, Shang fought well. He defeated several opponents, one after the other. At last, in the final round, he found himself up against the biggest bully for the championship. Shang’s leg was severely hurt in an illegal move, but he surprised everyone using a crane-like kicking technique balanced on one foot to swiftly defeat his opponent and win the day.
